Fred grew up in San Francisco and first surfed at Ocean Beach before moving to Hawaii in 1956. The book's focus however is on big waves and big wave surfing; beginning with Pedro Point and Santa Cruz in California, then the lifestyle on The Islands and the famous Hawaiian big wave surf spots.         This is a great book as Fred was an English teacher at Punahou High School in Honolulu. There are 18 chapters, so it's real easy to read a couple few at a time - as opposed to a novel where you can't really remember where you were.
