Description
1970 Scorpion Snowmobile, Vintage... 300cc SACHS. I picked this machine up back in 1996 and rode it several times. I was told that it was bored but unsure how much? and it is now a 300cc or 306cc? New rings as well... Someone big into the SACHS engines would probably know more about it. It never had a seat so I made one for it out of leather, foam and a piece of wood on the bottom. For now, it is only bungee corded on. This sled was last started and rode in 2003 or 2004? Its been garage kept since I got it in 1996. I imagine the little bit of gas left in tank is horrible so I did not want to try and start it. Hence, all the crappy gas would get sucked up into the carb. The compression is huge, I had to pull it with both hands in order to get 'er to not kickback and yank my arm out of socket! ok, concentrate, 3... 2... 1... PULL WITH ALL YOUR MIGHT! Whap whap whap whap whap. Quite an engine they put on these. I am hoping to get some more pics and a compression test tonight and will revise the listing to add them either later tonight or tomorrow. It would only take a bit of cleaning on the carb and get some fresh gas into 'er to bring it back to life. If anyone wants to come hear it run, we can squirt a shot of mixed fuel into the carb and fire it up. Just don't want to run it long enough to circulate the bad gas. We would probably disconnect the fuel line to prevent sucking old fuel into it if starting it is something you want to see before buying. We are located in Mayville MI 48744 area code, machine must be picked up or arranged for pickup within two weeks of auction end. Must be paid in full within two weeks of auction end. This machine does not have a title but we would provide a bill of sale incase the new owner wants to file for one. Also, the windshield was home made of plexy glass and is cracked up a bit... Imagine it to not have a windshield! Update 10-9-08- Took some more pictures 10-8-08. I was not able to get a compression test due to the case of the missing 7/8" deep well socket... Will pick one up from the hardware and get a good reading asap. Some of the photos include a tank that goes on the back. Maybe a spare or reserve tank? The tank it uses is down inside the body with the gas cap up in front of the headlight. The fiberglass is in good shape, the inside corners look like they had some repairs done at one point in time. The rear bumper bar and front bumper bar are in tact. I repainted the skies years ago and positioned the ski mounts to separate the skis outward by about an inch and a half on each side for better stability. The Scorpion emblems are intact. The engine says it was originally a 280cc. The gentleman I got it from said with it being bored out that it would be a 300. I like this sled, its a nice vintage. Need to let it go for Christmas money! I also saw another auction from a guy with the original red seat in mint condition. Might be worth checking out if you plan to restore this one... Update 10-9-08 #2- I ran over to the parts store and picked up a 7/8" deep well 6 point socket. Will get a good compression test reading at lunch today. Update 10-9-08 #3- Ran home at lunch a took a good compression test. Back when I did small engines I learned (2) things about compression. A small engine needs at least 30 lbs per square inch of compression to run. And, a normal compression test is based off from 3 good pulls. This is where she's at on the tester; 1 Pull = 90 lbs. 2 Pulls = 119 lbs 3 Pulls = 130 lbs I sure got a quick reminder of the power this things got. Just the thumping of pulling it over for the compression test brings back memories! At that time it was also garage kept...
