Description
I met builder Ray Allen designer and builder of the original Dog Bowl at Marina Del Rey Skatepark (whom I later met while he was building the duplicate Dog Bowl at Cosmic Waves Skatepark in Kalamazoo, Michigan) (he by the way was a big inspiration to my ramp building, tomorrow these years later am going to work with the pain crew building a Michigan park). During my second visit to the Marina Del Rey on this trip, the likes of Bert La Mar were in attendance (when I asked him for his autograph he spit on me, his mom and their fru fru puppy scolded him pretty bad) it was more funny for me at the time, as he just looked like a twerp having a meltdown. That was my first attempt at the skate autograph thing, although I was to psyched to give up so easy. Next on my agenda was Stacey Peralta whom was ripping the half pipe and he complied thoughtfully. Also adding a little ‘79 after his name. Then it was up to the upper keyhole, the one from the Devo Freedom of Choice video, Allen “Ollie” Gelfand and Mike Mc Gill were just tearing it up back there and I asked them for autographs between runs. The Florida boys inventers of the Ollie Air and the Mc Twist/540 were really friendly and very very cool. Then, there was a gnarly session going on at the Dog Bowl, so I skated on down there. It was Tony Alva, Jim Plummer, Billy Yeron (a Dog Towner and Alva’s sister boyfriend), Paul Hoffman (Second Wave Dog Towner), J.C. Char (Alva Team), Vicky Vickers (DTS), and her friend Laurie Bailey (uncertain), another hottie for skate; and Wesley Bennett. They were all very cool about autographing, and shared some interesting history with me and had a little fun with each signature. Vicky put a DTS under her name. Paul Hoffman drew a skateboard of sorts or a code under his name. And Jim Plummer made a fuss about Alva signing first and scribbled out Alva’s name in front of him making a joke about it. Alva just laughed and gave him some funny brotherly comments… The shredding continued. I recall great air, and everyone was stoked about massive carves and rail slides. One of them was doing rail slides all the way around the shallow end and off the hip to the deep end. It was pretty smokin’! I’m pretty sure I was there on a best of days, as everyone else was at school and I shared the park with these pros by myself and one or two others. It was a little surreal, and that was really what fueled legends that motivated us Michigan skaters to aspire to shred. Danforth is of that thought wave, although also an nomadic anomaly from the vortex. Additionally, for authenticity purposes I have + Marina Del Rey Photographs, + Marina Del Rey Membership Card, + Marina Del Rey Contest Flyer.
