Legend has it that Chief Lapu Lapu killed the Spanish Explorer Magellan with a Kampilan in 1521. It is a Moro (Muslim) sword and another legend has it that the prophet Mohammed presented it to the founder of the first tribes in Mindanao.Often a Sultan or wealthy Datu would possess an armort containing a large number of Kampilans which were handed out to his retainers in times of war. The Kampilan was designed to deliver chopping and sometimes slashing blows. It could easily cleave a man in half and is welded with two hands. The Kampilan can be used against multiple opponents and against cavalary. It would be used to take the horse's legs away and then to dispatch the prone rider. All in all it's a fearsome weapon indeed.This Kampilan was designed by my instructor, GM Yuli Romo and modelled on the 15th - 16th century version. GM Romo is a weapon enthusiast and is passionate about preserving the ancestral weaponary of the Philippines.A lot of differences with replica Kampilans come from the end of the blade and the hilt.  Many people view the Kampilan to consist of "Two Crocodiles" with their open mouths at each end.  The spikelet at the end of the blade causes a lot of discussion. Some people say it's for decoration, others that it is used for distraction, particulary about the eyes.  The curved part below the spikelet is sharpened on the real blade and you will see it fits the throat exactly.The blade contatins no sharp edges and has been buffed so it is perfect for training.
