Soft, so if it accidentally hits a swimmer, no harm done. Has two excellent handles, so easy to grip solidly. When a wave knocks you on your butt, no concussion when board whacks you in the head. Flying across country? Either pack in your checked luggage or ship it to yourself in a 2-day priority mail $10 box. (I suspect TSA would object to the pump so not safe for carryon). I am a small-framed 5'6" gal and typical cheap store boogie boards are too LONG for me. This shorter length is perfect. Also, soft, again, and well designed so at the end of a long day you aren't getting abraded round the waist and hips from the board edge.
