Description
Representing their country at just its second FIFA World Cup, the 2006 Qantas Socceroos left a lasting impression on both the sport and their nation in four thrilling encounters in Germany.   Australia arrived as the bottom ranked side in Group F behind titleholders Brazil, 1998 semi finalist Croatia and Asian champions Japan, but coach Guus Hiddink’s talent-laden squad quickly created a lasting impression on the world game.   Under a blazing sun at Kaiserslautern’s Fritz-Walter-Stadium, the Socceroos conceded an early goal against Japan. Hiddink’s second half introduction, of strikers Tim Cahill, Josh Kennedy and John Aloisi off the bench would prove a masterstroke and set Australia’s campaign alight.   Cahill equalised on 84 minutes before unleashing a thundering 20-yard shot five minutes later to give Australia the lead.   A brilliant run from Aloisi delivered a third goal in injury time, giving the Socceroos their first FIFA World Cup victory in stunning style, and setting the scene for a long standing rivalry in the years to come with the Asian Champions.   Australia next faced Brazil, producing a gallant effort and several opportunities in a 2-0 scoreline in Munich.   The final Group F encounter against Croatia would decide the make-up of the knockout phase, Australia needing at least a draw to advance. Craig Moore coolly slotted a penalty to cancel out Croatia’s opening goal for a 1-all half time scoreline.   A second Croatian goal left the Socceroos hopes in the balance before Harry Kewell pounced in the 79th minute to level and put Australia through, igniting the green and gold fans in Stuttgart and at home.   Facing three-time champions Italy in Kaiserslautern in the second round, Australia again performed with aplomb, defeated only by a final minute penalty.   Unlucky not to advance to the final eight, the Mark Viduka-led side did their nation proud in Germany and laid the foundations for the Socceroos of the future.   THIS IS THE ULTIMATE SOCCEROOS PRODUCT EVER PRODUCED, AND THE ULTIMATE GIFT DUE TO ITS PRESENTATION IN A BEAUTIFUL GIFT BOX. THIS LIMITED EDITION OFFICIAL SOCCEROOS GUERNSEY HAS BEEN HAND SIGNED BY MARK SCHWARZER, LUCAS NEILL, PATRICK KISNORBO, TIM CAHILL, JASON CULINA, MICHAEL BEAUCHAMP, BRETT EMERTON, LUKE WILKSHIRE, MARK VIDUKA, HARRY KEWELL, ARCHIE THOMPSON, BRAD JONES, VINCE GRELLA, BRETT HOLMAN, JOHN ALOISI, MICHAEL THWAITE, CARL VALERI, MICHAEL PETKOVIC, NICK CARLE, DAVID CARNEY, MILE STERJOVSKI, MARK MILLIGAN AND MARK BRESCIANO.
