All full size snooker and billiard tables and higher quality smaller tables use muliple pieces of slate, typically 40mm thick. Maximum thickness of a single piece slate is 19mm (3/4").  Multiple pieces allow heavier slate which provides increased stability to the table and a far superior playing experience!  Q.
