DETAILS OF ITEM This piece measures 42" wide and 12" long including the white paper streamers called the Shide. The thickest part of the piece measures about 2.75" in diameter. This is called a Gobo (burdock root) style Shimenawa from its shape. In Japan, Shimenawa or sacred twists of rice straw rope comes in varieties of sizes. They can be as small and light as a feather or weight over 3,000 pounds. They signify together with the white paper streamers signify a sacred or purified space, especially hung over doorways and such as Shinto Altar doorway. It comes with the white paper streamers. The condition of this piece is very good. Though it is not brand new, it has never been used.
