Description
Antique/Vintage 1872 Brunswick-Balke Exposition Novelty EXPOSITION NOVELTY The Exposition Novelty was the rarest table mass produced by J.M. Brunswick & Balke between 1870 and 1880. The Ebony Exposition was the rarest of the four models produced. This Ebony Exposition is an extra grade model with a low serial number, manufactured circa 1872. In 1872 the J. M. Brunswick literature proclaims the Exposition Novelty as the finest table manufactured any where in the world, wining all metals wherever exhibited. This Expo and accompanying accessories are the finest antique table suite for sale in America, bar none. The Expo was not produced after 1880 because of the degree of difficulty of the marquetry. The Expo and accessories have been in storage for 40 years, never in a poolroom, just in a private residence. There are no scratches or dents anywhere on the table. The Expo has been restored, but still retains some of its original French polish. The Expo is an over-sized 8’. The outside rail measurements are 56.5” x 104”. Specifics of the table are the following: Solid quartersawn Brazilian Rosewood rails with marquetry diamonds and a inlaid nameplate New Brunswick K66 rubber Four original Vermont slates with no cracks or chips Original gilded pockets come with worsted netting, original silk fringe, circa 1872, and gilded finials Inlaid rail bolt rosettes with Bronze Flowers Original cross members Inlaid bronze feet to keep players from kicking off feet corners. Materials used for the Expo marquetry are: Gabon Ebony, Mahogany, Sycamore, Redwood Burl, Ash Burl, Tulip Wood, Ebony dyed Cherry, Paduk, Birdseye Maple, Rosewood, Ivory, Mother-of-Pearl, Green Poplar, Red dyed Cherry, Abalone, Zebrawood, and 23 ct. gold. BRUNSWICK & BALKE EXPOSITION NOVELTY SIDEBOARD (Circa 1872) Various Billiard Manufactures, including Brunswick, designed and marketed combination sideboards to be used in conjunction with playing various pool and billiard games. They were usually installed in up scale private residences, not pool halls. Combination Sideboards were used to store pool and billiard implements and to keep score of various games. Combination Sideboards, of which few remain today, came in many shapes and sizes. This “Combo” was manufactured in conjunction with the Exposition. They both have the same matching serial number and similar carving and marquetry patterns. The “Combo” has two inlaid nameplates. One on the pediment and the other centers the main back panel, stating that the piece was manufactured by The J.M. Brunswick & Balke Co. Configuration and function of the “Combo” Dimensions are width 37”, depth 11”, and height 9’ 7”. Storage of 20 cues in angle layered Ebony circles. 20 antique cues included in purchase. Two sets of scoring beads to 30. The beads are denoted by inlaid numbers on acorn shape at 10, 20, and 30. These beads are used to score various games. Four shelves for storing pool balls. A mint condition set of both clay and Dart Balls with cue stars are included. Below the ball rack are seven Ebony rings for storing Billiard balls. This table is a Combination Table, meaning you can play both billiards and pool on the Exposition. The carom plugs are not shown or restored. A set of three ivory billiard balls are included in the sale. Matching triangle and brush included in the sale. Two Ebony turned caulk holders separate the upper and lower carved and inlaid Corinthian columns. Five pieces of caulk fit perfectly into each holder. The flat area between the caulk holders would be used to store brushes, triangles, dice cups, etc. The “Combo” is made of two pieces doweled together for easy assembly. The “Combo” does not take up much floor space, but provides a lot of functions. Materials used in construction and marquetry of “Combo” The main wood is ebonized cherry with secondary wood being ash. The woods used for marquetry Amboyna burl, California Redwood burl, Paduk, Gaboon Ebony, Ceylon Satinwood, Tulip, Sycamore, Rosewood, Green Poplar, Zebrawood, Mother-of-Pearl, and Birdseye Maple. The gilding is 23 ct. gold and gilded bronze ormolu. The “Combo” has been restored, but still maintains much of its original French polished finish.
