They were usually found thrown on the floor of the shed with the rakes, shovels and other equipment. I would carry them to the infield which always took two trips. If I forgot the cleanout tool I'd have to go back again for that. After the practise or game I would pull the bases , reinstall the plugs and make my  trips to the shed.
